Each summer, the town of Águeda in Portugal is transformed into a vibrant arts festival, adorned with colorful umbrellas suspended above the streets, alongside decorated lamp posts, murals, and various art installations that enliven this charming city.
In "Águeda: City of Umbrellas," players assume the roles of festival artists tasked with embellishing the city streets with their vibrant umbrellas, aiming to draw the most tourists to their sections. Artists must consider the needs of the city, the shops, and the tourists to craft the most eye-catching umbrella displays.
Participants will select tiles from a shared board and arrange them on their individual street boards. Once umbrellas are placed, players will choose one or two tourists to move to one of their umbrella rows for scoring. Strategic umbrella placement is key, as it unlocks parts of the tourist map, bringing more tourists into the game for placement on the board. The game concludes when a player's board is full, with scoring based on both the standard rules for placement and shared "Shop" cards that offer various scoring goals.
"Águeda: City of Umbrellas" accommodates 1 to 5 players and draws inspiration from Águeda's real-life annual Umbrella Project. 25th Century Games collaborated with the Umbrella Sky Project for the game's box art, the integration of their yearly tourist maps, and cultural advice.
